Rio Mar's New Head Pro Has Already Run Nearly Every Marquee Course in Puerto Rico

October 1, 2026

"An early morning round while the ocean is glassy." That's how Bob Gruer, general manager of Rio Mar Country Club, once described the rhythm of a morning at the resort's two golf courses. It's a small line, but it points at something residents of the Rio Mar community have been noticing all year without necessarily connecting the dots: the person now shaping that rhythm on the ground isn't someone new to Puerto Rico golf. He's someone who has already shaped it everywhere else.

A Familiar Face Behind an Unfamiliar Title

In August, Wyndham Grand Rio Mar named Aaron West its new head golf professional. On paper, a staffing change at a resort clubhouse rarely counts as news. But West's résumé reads less like a hire and more like a tour of the island's golf map. Before Rio Mar, he held leadership roles at Dorado Beach Resort, El Conquistador Resort, Grand Reserve Golf Club, Royal Isabela, and Dorado del Mar. That list spans the north coast, the east coast near Fajardo, and the west coast near Isabela. Between them, those five properties cover a meaningful share of the courses that define destination golf in Puerto Rico.

West brings more than 25 years of PGA professional experience to the role. He's a PGA Life Member and Certified Professional, with career honors that include multiple Teacher of the Year, Player of the Year, and Golf Professional of the Year awards. None of that changes who owns Rio Mar or how the courses are managed day to day. Troon Golf, the Scottsdale-based operator that runs golf operations at more than 950 locations worldwide, remains in charge of that structure. What changes is who residents will see at the first tee, in the pro shop, and running instruction and tournament programs going forward, and it's someone whose name has already been attached to nearly every other course locals might have played on a weekend trip across the island.

The Two Courses He's Now Running

Rio Mar's golf identity has always rested on having two genuinely different courses under one roof, and that hasn't changed with the new hire. The Ocean Course, designed by Tom and George Fazio, threads between the foothills of El Yunque and the Atlantic, with a beachfront 16th hole that's been singled out repeatedly as one of the more memorable par-3s in the Caribbean. The River Course, designed by two-time major champion Greg Norman, follows the bends of the Mameyes River instead, with several holes running directly along the water and El Yunque visible for much of the round.

The contrast between the two is part of what makes Rio Mar distinct from single-course clubs up and down the coast, and it's also the thing West now oversees in full. For residents who split time between the two depending on mood or weather, that continuity matters more than any single staffing headline. The courses aren't being redesigned. What's changing is the coaching, the tournament calendar, and the instruction bench behind them.

The Same Season, a Different Kind of Reset in the Kitchens

Golf isn't the only place inside the gates where familiar faces are landing in new roles this year. Rio Mar has been quietly reworking its dining lineup under an initiative the resort calls Paradise Reimagined, described on its own site as a plan to transform all ten of the resort's restaurants with chef-curated menus. Some of that work is finished. Some of it is still arriving.

Restaurant What's Changed
Amaya Coming soon. A modern cocina Española concept from Chef Daniel Lugo, drawing inspiration from flamenco legend Carmen Amaya.
Palio Already relaunched under the new vision, with a Sicilian-inspired steak and seafood menu.
Roots Coastal Kitchen Farm-to-table Caribbean cooking led by Executive Chef Ramón Carrillo, developed alongside Top Chef alums and James Beard finalists Jeff McInnis and Janine Booth.
Iguanas Cocina Puertorriqueña Fully renovated and reopened, now with an open demonstration kitchen and seating for up to 104 guests, under Chef Jorge Cátala.
The Vault A Copacabana-inspired lounge with live performances and handcrafted cocktails.

Of the group, Iguanas is the one that's changed shape the most visibly. The restaurant sits on the second floor of the Rio Mar Clubhouse, overlooking the golf courses, and its full renovation added a demonstration kitchen where the cooking happens in view of the dining room rather than behind a closed door. Chef Jorge Cátala, who has spent more than 15 years in the role, now works with fish and lobster sourced from local fishermen as part of the reopened menu. It's the kind of change that's easy to miss if you haven't eaten there since before the renovation, and easy to notice the moment you have.

What Actually Changed at the Pools

The pool areas went through a similar kind of quiet reshuffling. Aura Adult Swim Lounge now anchors the adults-only side of the property, while Turtle Cove and the Coqui Cove Splash Pool cover the family end. The Beach Club Pool sits closest to the water, alongside a 20,000-square-foot oceanfront sundeck that stretches along the sand. None of these are new pieces of land. What's new is the segmentation, giving distinct zones to distinct kinds of days rather than one general-purpose pool deck trying to serve everyone at once.

On the family side, the resort also introduced the Xplorers Club, described on its own press materials as a first-of-its-kind program in Puerto Rico built around structured, educational activities for younger guests. For residents whose routines include grandchildren visiting for the holidays or weekend guests with kids in tow, that's a genuinely new option rather than a rebrand of something that already existed.

Reading the Pattern

Put the golf hire and the dining relaunch side by side and a pattern emerges that's easy to miss if you only read the headlines separately. This year's changes at Rio Mar aren't the story of an outside disruptor coming in to remake the place from scratch. They're the story of the resort pulling in people who already know Puerto Rico's golf and hospitality scene from the inside, whether that's a head pro who has already run the pro shop at Dorado Beach and Royal Isabela, or a chef who has spent over a decade cooking two floors above the same fairways he now serves.

For anyone who already calls Rio Mar home, that distinction matters more than it might seem. A resort that imports unfamiliar talent tends to feel different from one season to the next as new hires figure out the property. A resort that recruits from within the same tight circle of island courses and kitchens tends to feel like continuity wearing a new title. Based on what's changed here this year, in the golf shop and across the clubhouse restaurants alike, Rio Mar is leaning toward the second version.
